What makes the snow stick that might happen tomorrow (1-21) ?
Hey Addie,
Great question! There are several factors that determine if the snow will stick to the ground.
1. The temperature on the ground must be 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below. One degree above and the snow will MELT.
2. If it rains before it snows then the snow has a tougher time sticking to the ground. Any rain lowers the amount of snowfall accumulations you will get.
3. Sometimes the snow will stick to the ground that is above freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer). However, in order for this to happen the ground temperatures must be very cold (33 or 34 degrees Fahrenheit) and the snowfall MUST be very heavy. Since the ground temperatures are above freezing the snow begins to melt the moment it lands.
Tomorrow is a classic situation. Most of York County will begin the day as rain and then switch over to snow (prediction). The brief period of rain lowers the amount of snowfall accumulations we will see.
However, you never know when the weather will change. Meteorologists have a tough time deciding snowfall accumulations hours before the event.
